Mic Placement That Kills Background Noise

Three dials, in order: distance (a hand-span from your mouth — every halving of distance buys roughly 6dB of advantage over the room), angle (speak across, not into, to dodge plosives and breath), and gain (set input so your close voice peaks healthy — then background sits far below). Placement is the only 'noise cancellation' that works on every app, every OS, every decade.

1. Set the distance

  1. Boom mic: two finger-widths from the mouth corner.
  2. Desk mic: on a stand or arm, pulled to a hand-span — never flat on the desk at arm's length.
  3. Laptop only: bring the machine physically closer than feels natural for the call's duration.
Why this works: sound intensity falls with distance squared — the mic can't tell noise from voice, but you can rig the contest so your voice arrives overwhelmingly louder. Six decibels per halving is the cheapest signal-to-noise money never spent.

2. Fix the angle and the mechanics

  1. Speak across the capsule at 30–45°, not straight into it — plosives and breath blasts vanish.
  2. Decouple from the desk: a stand, arm or even a folded towel stops keyboard thumps travelling up.
  3. Route cables clear of arms and fabric; the mystery scratching is almost always cable rub.
Why this works: angle solves the pops that make people back away from close placement, and decoupling removes the structure-borne noise that distance can't — the two objections to closeness, both fixable in a minute.

3. Set gain last, and low

  1. With the mic placed, open your OS input settings and speak normally.
  2. Set gain so your voice peaks comfortably below maximum — no red, no strain.
  3. Re-listen to a voice memo: background should now sit dramatically lower than before the move.
Why this works: gain amplifies the whole scene; proximity lets you afford less of it. Low gain plus close voice is the equation — a boosted distant mic is the exact inverse and the sound of most bad calls.
